Oh the stress of it all! Whatever remained of my relaxing summer has come to a crashing halt and been replaced by near panic! I have several fairly HUGE events/projects coming up and they seem to all have around the same deadline. Throw in the fact that we are MOVING this weekend, I won’t have Internet access, and we’ll still have to get this place cleaned and I’m not becoming frenzied just typing it.
First is the APA convention in San Francisco, where I’m presenting but can’t attend…a bit confusing I know! I’m part of a panel that’s giving an oral presentation called “What you need to know about people with disabilities that you don’t learn in grad school” BUT I can’t actually go because I have a mandatory TWO-week orientation at the hospital I’m going to be working at all year. So, I have to finalize the slides and write fairly comprehensive notes for a friend/colleague that’s delivering my part for me. That definitely has to be finished by the weekend.
Then, there’s the book review for a journal called Psych Critiques. You sign up for a book that meets your area of interest/expertise, they mail it to you, and you write a fairly involved review. The problem here is that since I’m not yet a “peer” to people who already have their doctorate, I have to be supervised by someone who already does. So my professor from school agreed, but it’s just a longer writing process with more people. The final version of our article has to be sent for publication by the 20th.
Here’s the book…It’s actually really interesting!
And last, but certainly not least, I’m writing an article for New Mobility Magazine about access to healthcare for women with disabilities. I’m in the process of conducting interviews for it and working on finalizing which issues I really want to focus on (because I think a book could easily be written on the subject!). This project is totally up my ally and alot of fun…I’m not stressed about DOING this one, it’s just I hope to produce something really powerful and awesome so that’ time-consuming.
On a bright note of things that are FINISHED~I officially completed my first practicum today! I worked with high schoolers on substance abuse issues and it was such an interesting year. I learned so much and my supervisors were awesome-I’m already missing their weekly dose of wisdom and peace to my world, but this year should be great in an entirely different way.
Adam and I are off to his new play of employment-He’s presenting on disability sensitivity and service dogs so I’m coming to watch/support/and manage Bailey B as he talks about her genius ways.
*THIS JUST IN…the disability blog carnival is UP so go check it out HERE!

Assume you’ve seen this, but just in case–if you’re writing about disabled women and access to healthcare, be sure you check out:
Sandy Welner and Florence Haseltine, _Welner’s Guide to the Care of Women with Disabilities_ . Dr. Welner (d. 2001), herself disabled after a stroke in her 30s, invented the Welner table, an accessible exam table, and worked with disabled women in her ob/gyn practice in Washington DC.

I’m sorry you couldn’t have made it. It would have been interesting to connect as I too was at the APA Convention and my blog covers disability issues (mostly policy related).
Would like to link to your blog and hope for a link back. Enjoy your projects.
Best,
Day
