A long weekend is just around the corner! It’ll be the end of summer, so break out your white shoes in the next few days and plan a final cookout for you unfortunate Northerners. For years I’ve called Labor Day “the worst day to be a wheeler” because of the Jerry Lewis MDA telethons that are incessantly run throughout the day. If you haven’t heard some of the statements Lewis makes to the nation about my culture, here are a few
“Pity? You don’t want to be pitied because you’re a cripple in a wheelchair? Stay in your house!?
“…I decided, after 41 years of battling this curse that attacks children of all ages and does it with 40 different ways to make its point (there are 40 different neuromuscular diseases), I would put myself in that chair … that steel imprisonment that long has been deemed the dystrophic child’s plight….
“…what about those who have no real use of their hands. For them there’s additional indignities of being dressed, being fed, being everything they wouldn’t have to be if only they had use of their hands….
“… I realize my life is half, so I must learn to do things halfway. I just have to learn to try to be good at being a half a person…”
So are you angry yet? Astonished that our media still allows these messages of hate to be spread with no response from the disability community? Surprised because you’d never heard of this “side” of the telethon? In the spirit of those “Choose your Own Adventure” books…If you answered YES to any of the above questions, you can now CHOOSE your path for the Labor Day Anti-Telethon Blogging event.
