Kristen M. is a young person with disability that I’ve been able to chat with online through our shared love of adapted swimming. She has Muscular Dystrophy and wanted to share her thoughts on Jerry Lewis and the MDA Telethon….

“Ever since I was a little girl I would watch the Jerry Lewis Telethon and feel so depressed after it was over. It is the same thing every year; hey look at these people and if you feel sorry for them please give us your money for research that hasn’t been doing any major changes for the better. I personally believe that if you want to inform others about a condition, you should not pressure them into giving money. Heck throughout the whole Labor Day it’s just that number to call so you can give money and seriously for what? They’ve had this telethon for over 50 years or so and isn’t it strange that nothing amazing has come out of it except for a free wheelchair or brace? Don’t get me wrong that is a help but it should not be broadcasted all day just showing the negative parts of people’s lives that in the end give you an awful feeling you’re left with at the end of the day. I personally believe that if they want to promote MDA then they should show people with their specific condition accomplishing things in their lives to prove that we aren’t people who just waste away. We aren’t helpless people and we are people who can accomplish anything we put our minds to.”

    Thanks for this. I agree — people with disabilities need for the rest of the world to be EDUCATED, not pity.
