25th Disability Blog Carnival: IF

If book cover with text 25th Disability Blog Carnival

The big day is finally here and I’m honored to serve as the launching pad for so many well-written pieces that are sure to make you think, laugh, get angry, relate, and respond in whatever way you feel is best. There are as many different takes on the “If” theme as there are colors in the falling leaves here in the United States so there’s sure to be something for everyone. I encourage you to join in on all the carnival fun by leaving your mark. Let me know what you think here and as you visit other’s blogs, leave them some love too! If you’ve written something that would add to our collection, feel free to share the link in the comments section. The more the merrier! Let’s get this carnival started…

Many disability bloggers interpreted our theme as a way to contemplate what our world might be like if there were some major, or even minor, changes to our way of being. Emma tried to imagine a world in which people actually stopped to think before speaking to her. Connie from blog [with]tv joins the chorus by pondering what might happen if we looked to a teenage disc jockey as a model for living as a reasonable person. Chewing the Fat points to the opposite end of the age spectrum as an example of what living a full life really looks like if we take the time to look. Planet of the Blind also challenges us to slow down, be reasonable, and question the panic that seems to result when and if inclusion in sports is allowed. While we’re in the mood for sport, Elizabeth from “Screw Bronze” takes us on an visual, written, and very autumn ride on her handcycle if you can keep up!

Every good carnival must have a bit of frustration to keep things exciting! Someone spills popcorn on you, the lines are too long, or your wheels make that sticky sound after rolling through spilled pop! Brit Alshamsa at My Private Casbah will certainly have you asking questions after reading her bit of odd news. Jennifer Justice over at Blog [with]TV shares triumph over doubt with a short blurb on NaySayers. Finding and keeping a job can feel like a carnival of its own for some of us! With another twist on a discussion of careers, if you ever wanted to ask a career counselor questions about working with a disability, now’s your chance! Check out this practical post if you’d like more options in your life.

The lurking question of IF seems to hold competing powers. For some, it sticks in the throat as a nagging reminder of the past or a challenge for the future. Reimer Reason wonders aloud through a beautiful poem about the many “If’s” swirling in the heads of parents rearing children with disabilities. Kintropy in Action questions if institutionalization of children with disabilities is really an option. For others, asking if leads to the road of empowerment, achievement, and victory. Ruth at a Different Light reminds us of the importance to overcome self doubts and internal questioning in a literary style all her own! PilgrimGirl also sees the danger of living in the “Kingdom of If Only” as she offers an honest reflection of how her world might be different ifGoldfish takes the plunge by asking and answering her own if’s. Astrid also asks, “What if I Weren’t Disabled?” PhilosopherCrip leaves us know choice with his battle cry that we MUST continue asking if. His links take you on an adventure of their own so I urge you to get to clickin! Blog [with]TV sneaks in with a bit of a commercial reminder to take a moment to listen to our younger advocates with disabilities, like “Big Al”. You won’t be disappointed!

With all the possibilities introduced by our contributors thus far, the beauty of this one tiny word is starting to emerge. We are joined for this event and for many others because of our minority tie as people with disabilities. What if our labels were shed and we dissolved into the minority? Astrid shares concerns about outsiders questioning her own identity and what a change in diagnosis might mean. Andrea Buzzed About how quickly people deem others ‘crazy’ if their behavior isn’t understood. Day in Washington has dug up two video gems to demonstrate what our world might look like if it were only accessible to people with disabilities. Shiloh from Sunny Dreamer shares another video take on this concept with additional provoking thoughts on the value of enriching the lives of children through the disability culture. Abnormal Diversity jumps on board to ask, “What if Autistic was Neurotypical?” Arthritic Young Thing makes us consider what would happen if we turned stereotypes around to use for our own advantage. You absolutely must visit her links because she’s also found some entertaining short videos! Reports from a Resident Alien continues to question stereotypes, even those held within our own disability communities. Perches in the Soul challenges attitudinal barriers within by speaking to her church about conquering able-ism. Dawg Oregon sheds light on the power of changing minds if we alter the way we view ourselves.

For most, it seems the hopeful limitless boundaries offered by the word “if” far outweigh the ties that might hold us back if we spend all our time dreaming…Still, David from Growing up with a Disability (and I!) can’t help but wonder what might happen in a world without celebrity gossip. The entry from the Literature, Arts, and Medicine Blog left me with a smile as I contemplated a world in which an unusual body is beautiful and not something to ‘fix’. Perhaps another alternative to viewing disability is to reconsider humans as the sole experts on this (or any) subject! Doggie Woggie shares that canines can certainly teach us a few things about disability if we take the time to learn. I’d like to offer my sincere thanks for sharing your time today by visiting so many impressive blogs that dared to pose and answer their own questions of, “If?” Again, I encourage you to sprinkle any and all feedback you might have along the trail of the carnival as you explore! Pitt Rehab will host the next carnival on November 8.

Thank you, Kara! Up early and full of gems. You’ve done a fine job juggling a diverse bunch of entries into a readable edition here. My understanding is that Greg at PittRehab has chosen the theme “How do you relax, unwind?” for his edition. So, now that you’ve taken your turn at hosting, relax, unwind, then tell us about it for the next edition!

Thanx for setting up this great carnival Kara! I think it’s important to look at possibility as more than a wish. “If” lets us see what CAN be if we work to make it so…

Thanks for including my post, Kara. This is the first one I’ve ever had in the Disability Blog Carnival. It means a lot to me to be included. Probably a lot more than you know.

If you don’t mind, I have another post that goes along with the “If” theme:

More on Martin Lee Anderson: The Disability Aspect

Anybody who wants to check it out is welcome.

I read this and I was like… “wow, that’s a wonderful summary, but where are the actual posts?” It took me like 5 minutes to figure out that there are links in the text… maybe my browser/computer is weird, but the text and the links look pretty much the same to me.

Ah well.. off to read them!
