Sexability Trainings: A Solution for Change from a Youth Perspective

I’m on my way to Washington DC to attend and present a workshop at this year’s National Council of Independent Living conference. I’ll be speaking on Thursday afternoon.I’ve uploaded my presentation HERE—–> (sexability-trainings_karasheridan.ppt) for those that attend the workshop or anyone that’s interested in facilitating discussion groups of people with disabilities about sexuality. In this presentation, I’ll briefly cover historical information about the oppression of our sexual identities, several myths related to sexuality and disability, and how to promote a partial solution to these attitudinal barriers further isolating people with disabilities. Sexability groups aim to meet several objectives and goals (check out the presentation to find these out!) and I’ve included a suggested teaching method because those motivated to lead these groups don’t have to have specific backgrounds in teaching, psychology, sociology, etc. They only need to embody the contagious to make social change by talking about these issues that are hard for the able-bodied world to discuss and virtually nonexistent in the communications between and about people with disabilities. If you have questions about the research behind this workshop, feel free to contact me at karasheridan@bellsouth.net.

I was in attendance of your NCIL presentation and found it to be informative, professional, and superb. I had not heard of the Ashley X treatment prior ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashley_Treatment ) and was highly disturbed after learning about it. You are doing fine work!
